Life Lesson
In a conversation with Morgan Housel, Mark Manson discussed The Money/Happiness Paradox.
Many of us believe that money will solve all of our problems and make us happy. But this isn’t strictly true.
Money does contribute to your happiness, but only if you were happy before it.
Manson reveals that research has shown that money makes you happier up to around £70,000/£80,000 a year and then it slowly levels off over time.
For the people that were happy without money, this drop off is slower. In fact if you plotted this on a graph the line would still show an increase in happiness with an increase of money but it would be very marginal.
However for those who were unhappy before they came into money, the drop off is much more significant. It stops altogether.
So, getting rich only makes you happier if you were already happy before.
If you were unhappy before money, it will only make you happier up to a certain point and then you will return to your baseline level.
Money isn’t the be all of your happiness.
Morgan Housel adds to this by saying that amongst the 10 richest men in the world, there are 15 divorces.
Money doesn’t buy you happiness so don’t hang the hopes and joys of your life on it.
